Best Skincare Hacks to Minimise Irritations from Retinol & Best Korean Products to Pair with Retinol

Retinol is Great! It visibly smoothens texture, brightens skin tone and improves wrinkles! Click here to read how to pick YOUR retinol. Hands up if you started using retinol to improve skin, but now your skin is worse than ever with breakouts and redness. I know, I know... This can be SO frustrating, especially when you've got your expectation so up high from all those skin transformation videos on Tiktok. But don't give up so soon!  This initial worsening of your skin condition may be due to something called "skin purging", which is totally normal! Keep reading so find out what "skin purging" is and how to manage it!

What is Skin Purging?

When you first start using a retinol product, you may notice that you are breaking out more than usual or that your pores seem to be clogged. Of this is your skin, then you are most likely going through what is called 'Skin purging', or what I like to call it the 'retinol uglies'! As bad as it sounds, you shouldn't be too worried as long as you know why it happens and how you can manage it!

This can happen because retinol increases cell turnover, which means that the skin sheds dead skin cells and oil more rapidly. As a result, clogged pores and blemishes may all come to the surface (causing breakouts) before they clear up and reveal a clear skin complexion.

How Long Does Skin Purging Last?

The skin purging process can vary from person to person, and it may take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to clear up completely. It's important to be patient during this time and not give up on the retinol product too soon. It's also essential to use sunscreen during the day because retinol can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Explore Best Korean sunscreens that can be used while using retinol.

Tips for Managing Skin Purging

If you're experiencing skin purging when using a retinol product, there are a few things you can do to manage the process and make it more comfortable:

  1. Start Slowly: If you're new to retinol, it's best to start slowly and build up your usage gradually. Begin by using the product once or twice a week and gradually increase the frequency over time. I followed the 'Rule of 3's' coined by Dr. Shah:  for the first month, use it every 3rd day; for the second month, use it every 2nd day and for the third month and so on, use it everyday!

  2. Use a Moisturizer: Retinol can be drying to the skin, so it's essential to use a moisturizer to help keep your skin hydrated.

  3. Be Gentle: Avoid using harsh scrubs or exfoliants on your skin while you're experiencing skin purging. Instead, use a gentle cleanser and avoid touching or picking at your skin.

  4. Consult a Professional: If you're experiencing severe or prolonged skin irritation, it's best to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional to adjust your skincare routine accordingly.

  5. Use certain ingredients: to minimize irritation and enhance the results, for example ceramide, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and Cica. Keep reading to explore best selling Korean skincare products that work wonders with retinol...
